Bangkok, northern culture, tropical islands and an established travel network make Thailand flexible for both first visits and slower returns.
The short version
Thailand is longer than it looks. Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a thirteen-hour overnight train, and the peninsula runs another thousand kilometres south of the capital, so a route that combines more than two or three settings turns into a sequence of transfer days. Bangkok plus the north, or Bangkok plus one coast, is a better fortnight than a circuit of both.

What it costs
Hostel dorm, street or food-court meals, local transport and mostly free sights. Islands and nightlife will push you out of this band.
Simple private room, mixed street and sit-down meals, app rides when useful and a few paid sights or tours.
Good small hotel or apartment, restaurants most nights, frequent rides and the occasional domestic flight or boat tour averaged in. Not luxury.
Thailand stays inexpensive when you eat and move locally. Islands, alcohol, private transfers and last-minute flights change the arithmetic quickly; these figures exclude international flights.
When to go
A country-wide calendar hides two coastlines: the Andaman side is roughest during much of the southwest monsoon, while the lower Gulf is often wetter later. Treat this as a planning baseline, not a beach guarantee.
Worth routing the trip around
Ayutthaya works as a day trip, but one night gives you the cooler first and last hours. Midday is mostly heat, exposed brick and tour groups.
A lower berth is wider and less exposed to the aisle lights. The train saves a hotel night, not time, so do not attach a tight flight connection to its arrival.
Longtail boats and limestone islands are straightforward; crossing the country to chase both coasts is not. Pick the side with the better weather window and leave slack for rough-sea cancellations.
Eat here
The reliable cheap meal is usually cooked to order at a busy stall or plain shophouse. A laminated photo book beside a major attraction is normally a location surcharge, not a quality signal.
Use a cooked-to-order wok stall with a steady local queue. Add a crisp-edged fried egg; skip places where the dish is sitting pre-cooked.
Look for a busy mortar-and-pestle stall with prices displayed. Say “mai waan” if you do not want the tourist-area version made very sweet.
Choose a lunch-focused shop where lime, shallot and pickled mustard greens come separately. The broth should be savoury, not mainly sugar.
A hot wok and condiments added at the table are better signs than bright orange noodles under a landmark-facing sign.

Read the fine print
Book through SRT D-Ticket when your travel date opens. Lower berths and weekend or holiday departures disappear first; do not rely on buying the popular overnight train on arrival.
Do not lock a non-refundable island chain before checking the regional monsoon and ferry schedule. The Andaman and Gulf coasts do not fail at exactly the same time.
Around 13–15 April, transport and central accommodation tighten and street travel gets wet and slow. Book ahead or build the disruption into the plan.
BKK and DMK are different airports, roughly 46 km apart. Avoid tight self-connections; the free inter-airport shuttle is only for passengers with onward-flight proof.
Two coasts
Pick the coast that suits your month instead of crossing the peninsula to see both — one good beach week beats two half-rained ones.
