Most people fly in, and it is the sensible choice. Direct flights from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City are €30 to €60 one way, there is no train, and the ferry is slow, so the plane saves a day in each direction. The island is big, so pick your side before you book a room.

The postcard white sand is in the south at Sao Beach and Khem Beach, while the northwest coast stays quieter and more local. A sunset coffee on the sand is €1 to €2, and the night market in Duong Dong is where the cheap seafood is. The cable car to Hon Thom is one of the longest over water anywhere at about €25, and island-hopping snorkel day trips run €15 to €25.

Set your expectations before you arrive. The south around the ferry port, the safari and the theme parks has been heavily developed, so do not come expecting a sleepy island everywhere. Rooms run from €12 guesthouses to €80 beach resorts, and the wet season is when the resort prices drop.
