Hanoi

Lakes, dense historic streets, food culture and a slower civic rhythm make Hanoi the natural anchor for a northern Vietnam route.

Best time

October to April is generally cooler and drier, though winter can be cloudy and conditions vary from month to month.

Front-row water-puppet seats sold at a premium, and cyclo loops that circle three streets for an inflated flat fare.

Hanoi rewards unhurried days built around short walks, food stops and different sides of the historic centre. The city makes more sense when there is time to revisit streets at another hour.

Use Hanoi as a base for the north, but separate city days from longer excursions so the capital does not become only an arrival and departure point.
