Ha Long Bay

The emerald water and limestone karsts northeast of Hanoi are the classic northern set piece, best seen slowly by boat rather than rushed as a day trip.

Best time

October to April is cooler and clearer. Summer is warm but hazy, with the occasional storm that can cancel a sailing at short notice.

The single-day cruise: it is four hours on the water wrapped inside six hours on a bus each way.

The day trip is the common mistake. It is roughly four hours on the water wrapped inside six hours on a bus, and by the time you are somewhere worth looking at, you are turning back. A day cruise runs €50 to €70 per person, but the overnight is the reason to come. A one-night cruise is €100 or so at the budget end and €150 to €230 for something mid-range, with meals, a cave stop and usually kayaking included.

Timing helps your wallet as much as your photos. July and August are low season, and many boats discount cabins by 15 to 30 percent, though that is also the haziest, wettest stretch. Whenever you go, do not book the cheapest boat blind, because the range in comfort is wide and the name on the brochure is not always the boat you sail on. Read recent reviews for the specific vessel.

If the main bay feels too busy, Lan Ha Bay off Cat Ba island has the same karst scenery with a fraction of the traffic, and you can reach it independently rather than on a package. Either way the appeal is slow: kayaking into a lagoon, a quiet swim, a deck at sunset.
