Andong

Andong is the argument for putting one slow, rural stop in a Korean route. Hahoe folk village, about half an hour west of town, sits inside a loop of the Nakdong river and is UNESCO-listed as a living clan village: thatched and tiled houses, working fields, and families who still live there. Dosan Seowon, a Confucian academy in the pines north of town, is the other half of the same story, and the two together explain more about how Korea organised itself than any city museum does.

The mask dance is the town's other claim. Hahoe byeolsingut talnori is a satirical village performance with carved wooden masks, still staged regularly at the village and given a full festival in late September and early October. The masks themselves are in a museum at the village entrance.

Practicalities are the catch. Andong is on the new Jungang line with fast trains from Seoul in about two hours, but the sights are outside town and served by local buses running every hour or two. Check the return times before you go out, keep a taxi number, and treat the day as two half-day excursions rather than a loop.

The reason Andong appears on a longer route is geography: it sits in the interior between the east coast and the southern rail spine, so it converts a backtrack to Seoul into a continuous line — Sokcho to Andong to Gyeongju runs south without repeating a single leg.
