Sentosa is a short causeway walk, cable car or monorail hop from the mainland, and once you are on it the island runs on tickets. The beaches, the boardwalk and the coastal paths are free; the aquarium, the theme park and the observation attractions are not, and they are where a Sentosa day quietly becomes the most expensive of the trip.
That makes it an easy decision rather than a hard one. If you are travelling with children, or you want one specific attraction, give it a full day and book the headline item ahead for a weekend. If neither is true, the beaches are unremarkable by regional standards and the same hours spent in the older districts will tell you more about the city.
