Little India is where the city stops being tidy, and it is the better for it. Serangoon Road and the lanes off it hold temples, goldsmiths, wholesale grocers, a mall that never closes and the densest supply of cheap rooms anywhere central, which makes the district the obvious base for anyone watching the largest line in a Singapore budget.
The district runs on its own clock. Sunday evening is the peak, when the streets fill and the food is at its best, and a weekday morning is comparatively quiet. Eat where the banana leaves come out at lunch, walk it at dusk rather than at noon, and give it a couple of hours rather than trying to combine it with the bay on the same afternoon.
