Best time
Year-round; mornings are best for the shophouse streets, and the district is noticeably quieter than the centre on weekdays.

- Katong laksa, €37 Rate 2026-08-26. A noodle-focused shop with fast turnover, ladling broth per bowl. Short spoon-cut noodles are the local format, not a shortcut.
- Book ahead
- Nothing needs booking. If you sleep out here, check how long your morning commute into the centre actually takes before committing.
- Skip
- A special trip to photograph one famous terrace. The whole grid of streets between Joo Chiat Road and the coast is the same architecture, unposed.
Katong and Joo Chiat are the reason to leave the centre. The pastel Peranakan terraces, the coffee shops that have not been renovated and the laksa that the district is named for sit in an ordinary residential grid about twenty minutes east of the bay, where the pace drops noticeably and the prices drop with it.
Give it a morning. Walk the shophouse streets before the heat, eat a bowl of laksa, and treat the whole neighbourhood as the exhibit rather than hunting the one terrace that appears in every photograph. It is also the most sensible place to spend a last half day, because the airport is a short ride further east rather than a trip back across the island.
