Best time
Comfortable year-round if you walk early or after dark; the weeks around Lunar New Year bring street markets, night lighting and much denser crowds.
At a glance
- Eat
- Hainanese chicken rice, €35 Rate 2026-08-26. A stall that only sells chicken rice and cuts each order fresh beats the famous queue you would spend an hour in.
- Book ahead
- Book beds well ahead for Lunar New Year, when the streets fill and rates rise. Nothing here needs a ticket in advance.
- Skip
- The souvenir stretch of Pagoda Street at midday. The same walk at eight in the morning is cooler, quieter and actually shows you the shophouses.
Chinatown packs the cheapest central beds, the largest concentration of hawker stalls and three of the city’s most-visited places of worship into a grid you can cross in fifteen minutes. That density is the point: it rewards two short visits at different hours far more than one long one in the middle of the day.
Walk the conservation shophouse streets early, eat lunch at the hawker centre before the office crowd arrives at noon, and come back after dark when the temples are lit and the heat has dropped. Treat the tourist market stretch as a thoroughfare rather than a destination, and keep the afternoon for somewhere air-conditioned.
