- Basing a whole week in the city itself. Cebu is the hinge of a Visayan route, not the reason for one.
Cebu City works best understood as infrastructure with a very good lunch. The airport on Mactan takes direct flights from across Asia, fast ferries leave for Bohol through the day, and buses run the length of the island to the beach and dive towns in the south. That makes it the natural pivot of any Visayan route, and a sensible place to lose a travel day rather than fight one.
Give it a day and a half on the ground. Magellan's Cross and the Basilica del Santo Niño hold the beginning of the Spanish story in the islands, Fort San Pedro is a short walk on, and Carbon Market is the honest counterweight to the malls. The rest of the time belongs to lechon, which Cebu genuinely does better than anywhere else in the country.
