Kuala Lumpur is easier to enjoy when sightseeing follows its neighbourhoods and rail corridors. The MRT, LRT and monorail reach almost everything a visitor needs for under €1 a ride, and a stored-value card removes the ticket queues. Grab fills the gaps at €2 to €5 across the centre, which matters more than it sounds: pavements are broken by motorway ramps, and the humidity turns a twenty-minute walk into a bad decision.

Group each day around one area. Chinatown and Merdeka Square make one walk, taking in Petaling Street, the Sri Mahamariamman temple and the Masjid Jamek riverfront. Brickfields and the Lake Gardens are another, and the Islamic Arts Museum there is around €4 and the best museum in the city. Bukit Bintang is the third: shops, the Jalan Alor food street after dark and the towers a monorail stop away. The Petronas skybridge is about €18 and the sunset slots sell out; the Batu Caves are free, thirty minutes north on the Komuter line, and best before nine in the morning.

Eating is where the capital earns its place. Hawker plates and mamak meals are €1.50 to €4, a kopitiam breakfast is under €2, and a mid-range restaurant dinner is €8 to €15. A dorm bed is €7 to €12, a private room is €20 to €35, and a good mid-range hotel with a pool is €40 to €75.

The capital works as both a short break and a gateway, but it deserves enough time to move beyond the towers and experience its everyday cultural mix. Three days is right for a first visit, and the airport is a thirty-minute express train or an hour by road from the centre, so arrival and departure days are not lost days.
