Sabah's coastal capital is a working city with a seafood night market, offshore island parks and the road to Mount Kinabalu, and it is where every Borneo route starts.

Best time

February to April is the driest and calmest for boats. October to January brings the wettest months, though the west coast of Sabah escapes the worst of the northeast monsoon.

A rushed day trip to the Kinabalu park gate purely for the view; without a permit you see the mountain from a car park you could have seen from the plane.

Kota Kinabalu is a transit city that happens to have a very good sunset, and planning around that saves disappointment. The centre is walkable, the waterfront night market grills the day's catch from about five in the evening, and a plate of fish, rice and vegetables is €6 to €14. Two nights covers the city, and the rest of your Sabah time belongs east or up the mountain.

The Tunku Abdul Rahman marine park islands are twenty minutes offshore by speedboat. The return boat is about €5 to €9 plus a park fee and terminal charge, and snorkelling gear is a few euros more; Manukan and Sapi are the busy pair, Mamutik the quieter one. Go on a weekday and take the first boat, because by eleven the beaches carry three tour groups apiece.

Mount Kinabalu is the other reason people come, and it is not a walk-up. Climbing permits, a licensed guide and a bed at Laban Rata are booked as a package through the park's operator, they sell out well ahead, names cannot be changed and cancellations are not refunded. Budget two days for the climb and do not attach a same-day flight to your descent. If the mountain is not in your plan, Kinabalu Park's gardens and the Poring hot springs still make a reasonable long day trip at €20 to €35 in shared transport.
