Best time
June to September combines drier weather with good sightings. February to April is the fruiting season for orangutans, and heavy rain from November to January can flood the riverbanks.

- Lodge dinner buffet, €715 Rate 2026-08-26. Almost every lodge sells full board, so compare package prices with meals in rather than menu prices; there is nowhere else to eat once you are on the river.
- Book ahead
- Book the lodge package first and the domestic flight around it; the good Sukau and Bilit lodges fill months ahead for June to September.

- A one-night package sold as a day trip from Sandakan. You pay four hours of road time for a single cruise and leave before the good one.
The lower Kinabatangan is a narrow strip of protected forest either side of the river, hemmed in by plantation. That is why the wildlife is so visible: the animals are concentrated along the water. Proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, hornbills and monitor lizards are close to routine, pygmy elephants move through in herds a few times a season, and wild orangutans are a matter of luck.
Lodges cluster around Sukau and Bilit, two to two and a half hours by road from Sandakan. Almost all of them sell packages rather than rooms: a two-night, three-day stay with full board, transfers, three or four river cruises and a guided night walk runs roughly €120 to €240 per person at the simpler lodges and two to three times that at the comfortable ones. Compare what is included rather than the headline nightly rate, because the cruises are the product.
Take the two nights. The cruises go out at dawn and again before dusk, and the difference between one night and two is the difference between one chance and four. Bring long sleeves, repellent and a dry bag; the boats are open, the rain is sudden and there is no phone signal at some of the lodges. No operator can promise you an orangutan, and any that does is selling something else.
