Cameron Highlands

Tea estates, mossy forest and cool nights at 1,500 metres make the Cameron Highlands the peninsula's break from tropical heat, reached by a slow mountain road.

Best time

Cool all year at 15 to 25 degrees. February to April and June to August are the clearest; November to January is the wettest and the mossy forest is often in cloud.

The strawberry and cactus farm circuit, which is a paid queue for a photograph and eats the hours the trails and tea estates deserve.

The road up is the first thing to plan around. Buses run from Kuala Lumpur in about four hours for €7 to €10 and from Ipoh in around two, and the last stretch is tight switchbacks that do not reward motion sickness. Almost everything happens in and around Tanah Rata, which has the guesthouses, the bus stop and the restaurants; Brinchang, further up, is louder and closer to the farms.

The BOH tea estate at Sungai Palas is free to walk into, with a café over the slopes and a small factory tour, and a Grab out and back is €6 to €10. The mossy forest and Gunung Brinchang sit above it, and this is the one place a half-day tour earns its €10 to €18: the boardwalk is only sensibly reached by road, and a guide explains what you are looking at. On a clouded-in day, skip it rather than pay to stand in fog.

There are numbered jungle trails from Tanah Rata itself, most of them one to three hours, free, and muddy after rain — check locally which are open before setting off. Nights drop to around 15 degrees, so bring one warm layer; most budget rooms have no heating. A dorm bed is €6 to €9, a guesthouse double is €18 to €35 and a mock-Tudor hotel room runs €45 to €80.
