Yogyakarta is the one Java city that works as a base rather than a stop. The kraton quarter, the batik workshops and the food streets fill the days between temples, and both Borobudur and Prambanan are inside an easy morning's drive.
The single decision that matters is the Borobudur ticket. The cheaper ground ticket keeps you in the courtyard looking up; only the timed temple-structure ticket gets you onto the upper terraces and the reliefs, and it comes with a guide and the required footwear.
