- Book the klotok and park permits weeks ahead through a licensed operator, and fly into Pangkalan Bun the day before.

- One-day orangutan tours sold from town. You spend the day travelling and arrive after the feeding has finished.
Tanjung Puting has no road network worth the name, and that is the point. You fly to Pangkalan Bun, board a klotok on the Sekonyer and spend two or three days moving upriver at walking pace, sleeping on deck under a mosquito net with the forest on both banks.
Orangutans are likely around the feeding platforms and never guaranteed anywhere. Proboscis monkeys, hornbills and gibbons fill the hours between, and the boat itself — meals cooked on board, no phone signal, the river at dusk — is as much of the trip as the sightings.
