Malang sits high enough to be genuinely cool at night, which is why it beats the roadside villages as a Bromo base. The centre is small, walkable and full of Dutch-era streets and coffee houses, so the waiting day before a midnight departure is not wasted.
Bromo is the reason most people come, and the trip is unglamorous: a jeep before one in the morning, a cold viewpoint, then the caldera floor after sunrise. Sleep in the afternoon, dress for real cold, and treat the second morning as a write-off.
