Best time
April to October for green hills and full rivers, with the heaviest rain from May to July; winter is mild but the low water reduces the river trip.

- Guìlín mǐfěn, €13 Rate 2026-08-26. A rice-noodle counter where you add the pickles and chilli yourself from the tray at the end. It is a breakfast, and it should cost under a euro.
- Book ahead
- Book the Li River boat to Yangshuo a few days ahead in spring and autumn; the fast train from Guangzhou or Shanghai fills at holidays.
- Skip
- The evening light shows on the city lakes and the Reed Flute Cave coach packages, both of which cost more than the river morning that follows.
Guilin is a hub with good scenery attached, which is a different thing from a destination. Flights and fast trains from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou all land here, the karst peaks rise straight out of the city, and there is a decent evening walk around the lakes. What there is not is a reason to give it three days when the same landscape is better an hour south.
Use it as the arrival and the departure. The classic move is a morning boat down the Li River to Yangshuo — around four hours through the hills that appear on the twenty-yuan note — with the bus or the fast train doing the same run in a fraction of the time when the water is low or the schedule is tight. Sleep here the night you land, then move.
